The arrogance of the Duke of Mantua

La donna è mobile

The woman is mobile is certainly one of the most famous opera arias in the world.

It is based on Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “Rigoletto” written in 1851.

La Donna è Mobile is the aria that the Duke of Mantua sings in the third and final act.

It is one of the most popular operatic pieces precisely because it is very catchy.

The text underlines all the arrogance and contempt that the Duke of Mantua has towards women as he prepares to meet a street woman “Maddalena”, sister of the hitman Sparafucile hired by Rigoletto, the court jester, to kill the Duke.

By fate and because the opera often leads to tragedy, Rigoletto’s daughter, Gilda, who is killed by mistake disguised as a man.

Rigoletto had its premiere at the La Fenice theater in Venice on 11 March 1851.

Rigoletto, together with Il Trovatore and La Traviata form the popular trilogy by Giuseppe Verdi.
